A bat just 2 oz too heavy costs your hitter 21 feet of distance per hit.

When a bat is too heavy, swing speed drops. But the bigger problem is what happens next: hitters start dropping their hands, casting the barrel, and dragging through the zone. Those mechanical compensations reduce sweet-spot contact from 40% to 25% of swings — and off-center contact loses 10-18 mph of exit velocity instantly.

The right bat increases sweet-spot contact rate from 25% to 40%.

A lighter, properly balanced bat gives your hitter faster swing speed, better barrel control, and more time to track the pitch. The result: they square the ball up more often. And squared-up contact is where exit velocity — and hits — come from. Every 1 mph of exit velocity adds 4 feet of batted-ball distance and roughly .008 points of batting average.

50 extra milliseconds to decide on every pitch.

A properly weighted bat swings faster, which means your hitter can wait longer before committing. At 50 mph pitching (typical 10U), that’s 50 extra milliseconds of decision time — 12% more time to read the pitch, lay off the bad ones, and time the good ones. That’s the difference between swinging at a ball in the dirt and driving a fastball to the gap.

At 96+ mph exit velocity, batting average jumps to .300. At 95 mph, it drops to .265.

One mile per hour is the difference between a line drive that splits the outfield and a lazy fly ball that gets caught. MLB Statcast data proves this relationship holds at every level: hit the ball harder, get more hits. For youth players in the 65-80 mph exit velo range, the relationship is even steeper — every mph matters more because fielders are closer and reaction times are shorter.

Why most bat advice is wrong

Three reasons your kid’s current bat might be holding them back.

📏

Height charts don’t hit fastballs.

A 12-year-old in rec ball and a 12-year-old in competitive travel ball need different bats. Sizing charts treat them identically.

🎯

Your kid isn’t average.

Does he pop up a lot? Struggle with curveballs? Swing late? Every specific problem points to a different bat solution.

💰

The expensive bat might be the wrong bat.

A $400 bat that’s too heavy performs worse than a $200 bat that fits. Price doesn’t equal performance.

Common questions

Is BestBatFor really free?

Yes, completely. We earn a small commission if you buy through our links. It costs you nothing extra, and we never recommend a bat because it pays more.

How is this different from the JustBats Bat Coach?

JustBats asks sizing questions. We ask performance questions — league, hitting tendencies, competition level. Their tool filters a catalog. Ours predicts how your hitter will actually perform.

My kid doesn’t use a swing sensor. Can you still help?

Absolutely. You know your kid better than any sensor. If you can tell us they pop up or swing late — we can recommend a bat that addresses it.

How accurate are the recommendations?

Our system is built on patented technology with 103 patent claims. It uses the same performance-matching principles used in professional baseball fitting.

Can I use this for softball?

Yes. Select Fastpitch Softball in the Sport dropdown and we adjust recommendations accordingly.

Your hitter deserves better than a sizing chart.
